Arthur LINTON (1475–1538) Baron of Castle Linton Upon Tweed & Christine STEWART (1475-1557) Lady Traquair were the 10th great-grandparents of Charles Edward LINTON (1890-1958) and the 11th great-grandparents of Kirk Louis LINTON (1914-1987)
Arthur LINTON (1475-1538) was the son of Richard LINTON (1445-1484) Baron (2) & Isabella HAY (1447–1508) Lady Tweeddale. Richard was Killed July 22, 1484, at the Battle of Lochmaben Fair, Lochmaben, Scotland. [i]
Arthur was born in 1475 in Castle Linton Upon Tweed, Peebles, Peeblesshire, Scotland and died in 1538 in Traquair, Parish Peebles, Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 63. [ii]
In the Spring of 1492 Castle Linton upon Tyne was razed to the ground by Sir Thomas Howard (1443– 1524) Earl of Surrey and 2nd Duke of Norfolk. The Earl was sent north by King Henry VII as the King’s Lieutenant administering law and order, collecting taxes and dealing with dissent, including riots. Thomas was styled Earl of Surrey from 1483 to 1485 and again from 1489 to 1514, he was an English nobleman, soldier and statesman who served four monarchs. [iii]
Arthur moved to Traquair and married Christine STEWART (1475-1557) Lady Traquair, circa 1495 in Traquair, Parish Peebles, Edinburgh, Scotland. Christine was the daughter of James STEWART Liard van Traquair & Catharina KERR, Christine was born in 1475 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland and died in 1557 in Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 82. [iv]
Arthur & Christine had five known children:
- i. Catharina LINTON was born in 1496 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland.
- ii. Isabella LINTON was born in 1498 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland.
- iii. Christina LINTON was born in 1501 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland.
- iv. Arthur LINTON (1505-1585) Laird Traquair was born in 1505 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland and died in 1585 in Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 80. Arthur married Agnes GRAHAM (1507-1587) Lady Traquair, (2) the daughter of George GRAHAM (1470-1513) Lord Callendar & Elizabeth OLIPHANT (1480-1525), circa 1530 in Traquair, Parish Peebles, Edinburgh, Scotland. Agnes was born in 1507 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland and died in 1587 in Edinburgh, Scotland, at age 80.
- v. Richard LINTON was born in 1507 in Traquair, Peeblesshire, Scotland and died in 1570 in Eslington, Northumberland, England, at age 63.
