James LINTON (1769-1854) was the son of Quaker master millwright Isaiah LINTON (1739-1775) & Sarah HIRST (1742-1823).  [i]  James was born on December 10, 1769, in Wrightstown Township, Bucks County Pennsylvania. [ii]  When James was born his father, Isaiah, was 30 and his mother, Sarah, was 27.

 

James was born into the Quakers or Religious Society of Friends faith. [iii] Due to his father’s erecting of numerous water gristmills and repairing of ironworks in the Maryland Colony, James and his older sister Laura Ellicott LINTON (1766–1825) and brother Thomas LINTON (1768–1829) moved to Baltimore (later became Hartford) County, Maryland and lived there until his father died in 1775 from a milling accident.  After Isaiah’s death the family, now including William LINTON (1772–1848) and Sarah LINTON (1774–1817) moved back to Isaiah’s Jericho Plantation in Wrightstown. [iv]

James was a prominent Quaker Elder, miller, mill owner and farmer by trade. He owned many tracks of farm land and held the mortgages on numerous more tracks of land in Bucks County, over the years. In the 1793 Wrightstown Township Tax Records James is listed as a single man with no taxes being taxed. In the 1798 Newtown Township tax records, James owned a Common Lot in the township common worth £ 60 pounds and taxed £ 11 pounds. John LINTON resided on 245 acres of land in Newtown owned by William LINTON Sr., worth £4,900 and paid £ 31 pounds in taxes. John owned 10 Common Lots in Newtown Commons valued at £ 560 pounds and paid £ 6 pounds in taxes. William LINTON Jr., resided on 57 acres of land owned by Pope Liadon (?) valued at £ 1,700 pounds and taxed £23 pounds. [i]  

On March 12, 1801, James married Ann CROASDALE (1776-1852) in the Langhorne Meeting House, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [i] Ann was the daughter of Jeremiah CROASDALE (1751-1829) [ii]Anne QUINBY (1749-1831). Ann was born on December 13, 1776, in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [iii]  Ann was the 10th great-granddaughter of Johannes de CROASDALE (1460–1523). Johannes was born in 1460 and died in 1523 in Crowsdale Wood, North Yorkshire, England. Ann’s 2nd great-grandparents, the Quakers, Ezra CROASDALE (1655-1740) & Ann PEACOCK (1668–1732) emigrated to America.   They arrived at Philadelphia Dock on October 22, 1682 on board William PENN’s ship Lamb. Ezra was born on June 21, 1655 in Newhey, Moorside, Parish Bradford, Yorkshire, England and died on April 18, 1740 in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Ann was born in 1668 in Killdeale, Yorkshire, England and died on October 8, 1732 in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. 

Over the years, James owned and operated water grist mills in Newtown and Makefield Township Bucks County and one in Delaware Water Gap in Stroudsburg,  Monroe County, Pennsylvania.  On May 14, 1817, William Moore mortgaged 4 acres in Makefield for $511 to James.  [iv]  On June 3, 1817, Jacob Scott mortgaged 62 acres in Makefield for $2,900 to James.  [v]  .  In March of 1819, James requested a Quaker Certificate of Removal from Newtown Meeting to Strousburg Meeting in Delaware Water Gap in Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. James took over the milling operations at one of his wife’s Croasdale family owned mill. 

Ann died on July 11, 1852, in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 75. She was buried on July 14, 1852, in Newtown Quaker Meeting House burring grounds, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [vii]  James died on July 31, 1854, in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, at age 84 and was buried on August 2, 1854, in the Newtown Friends Meeting House burring ground next to his wife Ann.  [viii]

 

James & Ann had eight known Children:

 

i.  George Croasdale LINTON (1802-1863) [ix] was born on 2 January 1802 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [x] He was born into the Quakers - Religious Society of Friends. George died on May 16, 1863 in Farmersburg, Clayton County, Iowa, [xi] at age 61, and was buried on May 18 1863, in Clayton Quaker Meeting Cemetery, Clayton County, Iowa. [xii] George married Susan FOULKE (1804-1894) [xiii] on November 9, 1824 in Delaware Water Gap, Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Susan was the daughter of Thomas FOULKE Jr., (1665–1739) & Elizabeth CURTIS (1666–1731).  Susan was born on April 20, 1804 in Monroe County, Pennsylvania [xiv]  and died on November 21, 1894 in Clayton County, Iowa, at age 90. She was buried on November 24, 1894 in Clayton Quaker Meeting Cemetery, Clayton County, Iowa. 

ii.  Doctor Lewis Colbert LINTON (1803-1876) [xv] was born on July 7, 1803 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, [xvi] He was born into the Quakers - Religious Society of Friends.  Lewis died on July 21, 1876 at Piney Grove Plantation, Mount Vernon District, Fairfax County, Virginia, [xvii]  at age 73. Lewis was buried on July 24, 1876 in the Union Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia.   Lewis married Sarah KOCHER (1810-1870) [xviii] in 1827 in Delaware Water Gap, Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania. Sarah was the daughter of Peter KOCHER (1774–1849) [xix] & Maria "Mary "Catherina PIPHER (1787–1850). [xx] Sarah was born on January 7, 1810 in Delaware Water Gap, Stroudsburg, Monroe County, Pennsylvania [xxi] and died on October 8, 1870 at Piney Grove Plantation, Mount Vernon District, Fairfax County, Virginia, at age 60. She was buried on October 10, 1870 in the Union Cemetery, Alexandria, Virginia. [xxii] 

iii. Doctor Maurice Peter LINTON (1807-1872) [xxiii]  was born on 27 January 27, 1807, in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxiv] He was born into the Quakers - Religious Society of Friends.  Maurice died on May 22, 1872 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, at age 65. [xxv]  Maurice was buried on May 26, 1872 in the Laurel Hill Cemetery, Newtown Quaker Meeting House Cemetery, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxvi]  Maurice married Ann Stokes LANCASTER (1810-1842) (28) in 1830 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Ann was the daughter of Moses LANCASTER (1783–1879) (29) & Matilda STOKES (1787–1867).  Ann was born on October 27, 1810 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and died on November 23, 1842 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 32. Ann was buried in 1842, in the Newtown Quaker Meeting House Cemetery, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Maurice next married Lydia LANCASTER (1820-1899) about 1840 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Lydia was the daughter of Moses LANCASTER (1783–1879) & Matilda STOKES (1787–1867).  Lydia was born on January 9, 1820 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania and was born into the Quaker Faith.  Lydia died on April 28, 1899 in Newtown Township., Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 79, and was buried in 1899 in Newtown Quaker Meeting House Cemetery, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxvii] 

iv.  Robert Henry LINTON (1809-1884)  was born on August 17, 1809 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxviii] Robert was born into the Quakers - Religious Society of Friends. Robert was a Philadelphia merchant and a “world traveler” also “played the piano well”. He lived a while with his brother Doctor Lewis Linton in Virginia. On March 26, 1884, he hanged himself in the in Almshouse, in Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 74, and was buried on March 31, 1884 in Almshouse yard, in Doylestown Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxix] 

v.  James LINTON (1812-1839)  was born on February 4, 1812 in Middletown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxx] He was born into the Quakers - Religious Society of Friends. James died on December 28, 1839 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania at age 27, He was buried in December 1839 in 4th Presbyterian Burial Ground, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. [xxxi] 

vi.  Ann Croasdale LINTON (1815-1895) was born on August 29, 1815 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Ann was born into the Quakers - Religious Society of Friends. Ann died on June 9 1895, in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, at age 79. She was buried in June 1895 in Newtown Quaker Meeting House burring ground, in Newtown Township Bucks County, Pennsylvania. [xxxii] 

vii. Deborah Caroline LINTON (1819-1894) was born on 27 January 1819 in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, she was a member of the Religious Society of Friends. Deborah died on 10 January 1894, in Langhorne Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 74. She was buried in January 1894 in the Middletown Friends Cemetery, Langhorne Friends Meeting House Cemetery.   Deborah married Mahlon RIDGE, the daughter of Aaron RIDGE & Elizabeth KINSEY, on 23 March 1845 in Northampton, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Mahlon was born on February 16, 1815 in Bensalem, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Religious Society of Friends.   Mahlon died on August 29, 1903, in Langhorne Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania at age 88, He was buried in August 1903, in the Middletown Friends Cemetery, Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. viii. Jeremiah Croasdale LINTON (1821-?) was born on 22 June 1821, in Newtown Township, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Jeremiah married Clara DUNGAN, daughter of William J. DUNGAN & Sarah SHEARER, about 1841 in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Clara was born in 1821 in Pennsylvania and was born into the Quakers Faith.  Jeremiah next married Mary S. DUNGAN, on 25 March 1847, in Pennsylvania. Mary was born on 28 September 1828 in Pennsylvania and died on 28 November 1874, at age 46. [xxxiv]
