John Walker WILLIAMS (1840-1905) & Sarah “Salley” Ann Francis CAPPS (1846-1943) were the grandparents of Clara Myrtle GRAY-SADLER Bird (1900-1988). 

 

Clara’s grandfather, John Walker Williams (1840-1905) was born on November 26, 1840, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. [i] John was the son of William Mastin WILLIAMS Sr., (1809-1859) of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia & Eliza Jane EMBERSON (1822-1856) of Hempstead County, Arkansas. [ii]  

In 1865, John married Sarah “Salley ”Ann Francis  CAPPS (1846-1943) in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Sarah was born on on February 14, 1846, in Pungo, Princess Anne County, Virginia

Clara’s grandmother Sarah was the daughter of Ira CAPPS Jr., (1802- 1881) and, his cousin, Lydia CAPPS (1827-1882).  Ira was born on November 17, 1802, in  London Bridge, Pungo, Princess Anne County, Virginia and died on January 8. 1881 in Charity Neck, Pungo, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Lydia was the daughter of William Hines CAPPS (1802–1850) & Margaret "Peggy" Ann YADON (1806–1876)  This mariage gave Clara two totally different Capps ancestral lines.

According to the 1870 Census: John lived on a farm, in dwelling number 372 with a personal estate value of $400. John aged 24 was living with his wife Sarah age 22 and their two children, Alice age 3 and Emma Williams age 1, They lived near the Post Office Princess Anne Court House in Seaboard, Princess Anne, County, Virginia.

According to the 1900  Census: John W, Williams, age 54, born February 1846 in Virginia. He was  residing in a rented house at 15 Maple Avenue, Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk City, Virginia; His Spouse's name was Sarah F Williams, age 35 born June 1864, married in February 1887, years married 13; John’s occupation was a Carpenter-House, Months Not Employed 6; he could  read but not write and can speak English. Living with them were their children, Edward G. Williams age 24 born April 1876 and Russell G. Williams age 19 born April 1880.

According to the 1908 Norfolk City Directory, Widow Sarah Williams resided at 208 Reale Avenue Norfolk, Virginia.

John died on August 13, 1905, in Princess Anne County, (now Virginia Beach City) Virginia, at age 65. He was buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery, Plot EXT 56-12, Norfolk, Virginia

Virginian Pilot Saturday November 18, 1905, Obituary

“The funeral of John Williams was solemnized from Trinity M. E. Church, Brambleton, at 2 o'clock yesterday afternoon. The service was conducted by the pastor, Rev. R. N. Hartness. The interment was in Elmwood Cemetery. The pall-bearers were as follows: A. N. Sadler, T. J. Harrison, Walter Williamson, James Malbon, N. T. Jones and F. Dickson.”  (A.N. Sadler was

 

Sarah died on December 8, 1943, in Norfolk County, Virginia, at age 97. According to her obituary, she had 15 grandchildren, 47 great-grandchildren and 12 great-great-grandchildren when she died. 

 

John & Sarah had six known children: 

  1. Alice J. WILLIAMS (1866-1920) was born in June 1866 in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Alice died on June 10, 1920, in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia. at age 54, and was buried on June 12, 1920, in Elmwood Cemetery, Norfolk, Norfolk City, Virginia. [iii] 

Alice married Quinton B. McCLANNAN (1864-1928) the son of James E. McCLANNAN (1844-1906) & Mary Ellen, (1838-1909) in 1887. Quinton was born on March 13, 1864, in Virginia, and died on July 7, 1928, in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia4 at age 64, and was buried in Norfolk, Norfolk City, Virginia. [iv]

Alice had a residence in 1870 in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. [v]  She had a residence in 1880 in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. [vi]  She had a residence in 1900 in Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk City, Virginia. [vii]   She had a residence in 1910 in Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk, Virginia. [viii]  She had a residence in 1920 in Norfolk, Monroe Ward, Norfolk County, Virginia. [ix]

 

  1. Emma F. WILLIAMS(1869-1912) was born on November 15, 1869, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. She had a residence in 1870 in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. [x]

On December 8, 1887, Emma married George Albert CAPPS (1861-1918) the son of Albert L. CAPPS  & Thursday Ann (1864-?) , in Princess Anne County, Virginia. George was born on May 22, 1861 in London Bridge, Pungo, Princess Anne County, Virginia. [xi]

Emma had a residence in 1910 in Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk,  Virginia. [xii] Emma died on June 28, 1912, in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia, at age 42, and was buried in June 1912 in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia.  George died on February 8, 1918 in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia4 at age 56, and was buried in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia. [xiii]

 

  1. Lula Virginia "Jennie" WILLIAMS (1873-1935) was born on September 26, 1873, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Jennie died on September 28, 1935, in Virginia, at age 62, and was buried in September 1935 in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia.  [xiv] 

Jennie had a residence in 1880 in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. 15.  She had a residence in 1900 in Grafton, York County, Virginia. 33 She had a residence in 1914 in 502 Church, Norfolk, Virginia. 34 She had a residence in 1930 in Norfolk, Norfolk, Virginia. 35 She had a residence on March 5, 1931, in Norfolk, Virginia,  36

In ceria 1890, Jennie married George Irving GRAY (1874-1905)  37 son of Stephen Simon GRAY 38 & Mary Agnes MURRAY,39.33 George was born in February 1874 in Cokeville, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, 40 died on May 31, 1905, at Gray Station, Pittsburgh, Allegheny County, Pennsylvania 41 at age 31, and was buried in June 1905 in Saints Simon and Jude Cemetery, Indiana County, Pennsylvania.

 

Jennie & George five had Children:

i.  Susie GRAY (1895-?) was born in 1895, in Princess Anne County, Virginia. 5Susie was raised by her mother until she "went bad" and ran away from home in her early teens to New York City. 6

 

ii.  Ivy Lee GRAY (1896-1930) was born in 1896, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia 7 and died in 1930 in Norfolk, at age 34. Ivy Lee was raised by her grandparents, John Walker WILLIAMS (1840-1943) and Sarah A. CAPPS (1846- 1943). Ivy Lee married Raymond B. MURRAY, the son of John T. MURRAY (1837-?) and Alice S. unknown, (1837-?), in 1915, in Virginia. Raymond was born in 1893, in Norfolk County, Virginia and died in 1963, in Norfolk, Virginia, at age 70. 8    Raymond and Ivy Lee had known nine children: Ivy Lee MURRAY (1916-1991), Ruth MURRAY (1917-1975), Alice MURRAY (1919), Margaret MURRAY (1921), Raymond John MURRAY (1923), Olivia MURRAY (1924), John MURRAY (1926), Catherine MURRAY (1928), and Bruce Jay MURRAY (1929). 9

 

III. Edward Luxford GRAY Sr. (1897-1960) was born on September 20, 1897, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia.  Edward  died on August 22 1960 in Denbigh, Virginia Beach County, Virginia   10 Edward was raised by his grandparents John WILLIAMS (1840-1943) and Sarah A. CAPPS (1846-1943) on their farm in Seaboard. 11 According to his World War I Draft Registration Card, which he signed on September 12, 1918, states that he is of medium height, small build, brown eyes, black hair and age twenty-one. He was living at 739 North Malthy Avenue, City of Norfolk, Virginia. Edward was working as a machinist, employed by the Norfolk Navy Yard, Portsmouth, Virginia. Edward listed his nearest relative as R. G. Williams at the same address. 12 Russell G. Williams (1881-1942) was Edward’s uncle. Also living there were is aunt Edith Oliva SADLER Williams (1886-1979) and their son Clarence Miller WILLIAMS (1912-1987) 13  

Edward first married, circa 1919, in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia, to a unknown girl, born in 1897. Edward next married Ethel Meredith Etheridge, daughter of Thomas E. ETHERIDGE (1879-?) and Annie (1880-?) unknown, on April 18, 1927, in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia. Ethel was born in 1903 and died in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia. 14

Edward and Ethel had three known children: Edward Luxford GRAY Jr., (1917), born in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia. Carol GRAY, born in 1919, in Seaboard, Princess Anne Co., VA. Olivia Paige GRAY, born in 1924, in Princess Anne Co., VA. 15 Olivia married Roy CLAY circa 1944.    

  

iv.  Bruce GRAY (1899-?) was born in 1899, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Bruce was raised by his uncle and aunt, Peter DYLK (1877-?) and Mary WILLIAMS (1882-?), of Princess Anne County, Virginia. 16

 

v.  Clara Myrtle GRAY (1900-1988was born on June14, 1900, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia., Clara was adopted and raised by her uncle, Annas Nias SADDLER and Margaret Eddie CURLING of Great Bridge, Norfolk County, Virginia. Clara married Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) on August 7, 1917, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Clara and Gus had sixteen children: 

Guy Edward "Eddie" BIRD (1918-1957):  Earl Alford BIRD (1919-1991);  Myrtle Elizabeth BIRD Dougall Holzapel (1921-1996);   Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012)  J. A. "Jeff Augustus"  BIRD (1923-2015);  Albert Irvin BIRD (1925-2008); Donald Milton BIRD (1926-1999);   Margaret Drusilla BIRD Norwood (1928-2019); Iva Lee BIRD Bryant (1930-1993);  Carlton Norris Bird (1931-2002);   Franklin Delano "Buddy" BIRD (1934-2016);  Frances Dell BIRD Shivers (1934-2014);  Mary Louise BIRD Gill (1936);   David Brewer Bird (1938-1997)Patricia "Pat" Marjie BIRD Bronstad (1941)-2023); Beatrice "Betty" Jean BIRD Jensen (1942)  

Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD died on June 12, 1954, in his home, on Meadow Oaks Drive, in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, at the age of 61. On June 15, 1954, Gus was laid to rest in the Blue Bonnet Garden Section, of Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.

Clara died on December 27, 1988, in the Haltom City Central Hospital, Haltom City, Tarrant County, Texas, at the age of 88. On December 31, 1988, Clara was laid to rest next to her husband, of some thirty-seven years, in the Blue Bonnet Garden Section, of the Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.

 

 

In 1915, Jennie next married Charles Winslow GOODWIN (1883-1976) in Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia.  Charles was the son of Caleb Winslow GOODWIN (1860-1918)  & Mary Elizabeth BROTHERS (1861-1944)

Charles was born on June 18, 1883, in Portsmouth, Norfolk County Virginia. He enlisted in the Army on October 5,  1911 and was discharged on May 8, 1919.  According to his Registration Card Charles lived at RFD 4, Watson Street, Norfolk County, his was physical build was medium with Brown hair and brown eyes. He was a World War I veteran, the war lasted from 28 July 28, 1914, to  November 11, 1918.   [xv]  

According to the 1931 Norfolk, Virginia, City Directory Storekeeper Charles and Lula were living at 009 Ellwood Campostella Hights Portsmouth, Norfolk County, Virginia (states that it is their  residence, they may have lived above his store).

Goodwin; Home in 1930 Norfolk, Norfolk  City, Virginia;  Street Address, Elmond Street, Ward of City Precinct 32, Block 2650, House Number 1009 Dwelling Number 63; Family Number 75; Owned House; Home Value $3,600.00; Radio Set Yes; Lives on Farm No; Age at First Marriage 32; Attended School yes; Able to Read and Write Yes; Father's Birthplace North Carolina; Mother's Birthplace North Carolina; Able to Speak English Yes; Occupation Storekeeper; Industry Shipyard; Class of Worker Salary worker; Employment Yes; Household members: Charlie W. Goodwin age 47 Head of house and Lula Goodwin age 58 wife. [xvi]

Jennie died on September 28, 1935, in Virginia, at age 62, and was buried in September 1935 in the Forest Lawn Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia.

Charles died on January 15, 1976, in Norfolk City, Virginia, at age 92. According to his obituary he was a retired as superintendent of Colonna's Shipyard, Berkley. He was a charter member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church and honorary member of its board of stewards. He was a member of Woodmen of the World. He was buried in Riverside Memorial Park, Norfolk, Virginia.

 

  1. Edward Garrett WILLIAMS (1876-1947)  was born on April 7, 1876, in Princess Anne County Virginia. He had a residence in 1880 in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia,  He had a residence in 1900 in Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk City, Virginia.

On December 9, 1903, Edward married Vivian Leigh CHAPMAN (1882–1954) in Norfolk, Virginia. The wedding ceremony was performed by Geo. Westley Jones with John W Williams and Sarah F. Williams among others in attendance. Edward’s occupation was listed as a carpenter. [xvii]

Edward & Vivian had one known child: Ellen A WILLIAMS (1907–1992).born on February  6,  1907 in  Norfolk, Virginia and died on August 11,  1992 in  Orange County, Florida. She married John Funk SEYMOUR (1901–1954). They had two children: Margaret SEYMOUR Jarrett (1927–2001) and Barbara SEYMOUR Cleaves (1929–2016). [xviii]

According to his World War I Draft Registration Card, 1917-1918: Name Edward Garrett Williams; Race White; Birth Date April 7, 1876; Residence Date  1917-1918, Street Address, 901 Reservoir Avenue, Norfolk, Virginia; Draft Board 1; Physical Build Slender; Height Medium; Hair Color Black; Eye Color Brown; Spouse Vivian Williams  [xix]

Edward died on July 1, 1947, in Norfolk, Virginia.

According to his obituary:

Norfolk Virginian Pilot Wednesday July 2, 1947, Edward Garrett Williams, 71, died at his residence, 825 Marshall Avenue, yesterday at 9:45 a.m., after an illness of three months.

He was a native of Princess Anne County and had been a resident of Norfolk since 1898. He was a member of Brambleton Avenue Methodist Church, Knights of Pythias, Charity Lodge No. 10, and Woodmen of the World, Elizabeth Camp No. 3.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Vivian Chapman Williams; one daughter, Mrs. Ellen William Seymour, of Washington, D.C., and two granddaughters, Miss Margaret Vivian Seymour and Miss Barbara Elaine Seymour, both of Washington.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Cox Funeral Home tomorrow at 2 p.m. by the Rev. James W. Brown, pastor of the Brambleton Avenue Methodist Church. The burial will be in Elmwood Cemetery. [xx]

 

  1. Mary WILLIAMS (1878-?)  was born on December 10, 1878, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. Mary married Peter DYLK about 1897 in Virginia. Peter was born in 1877 and died in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. [xxi]

 

  1.  Russell Greenville WILLIAMS(1880-1942) was born on November 12, 1880, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. He had a residence in 1900 in Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk Virginia [xxii]

On June 22, 1904, Russell married Edith Olivia SADLER the daughter of Ananias Noris SADLER & Margaret Ellen "Eddy" CURLING, in Norfolk, Virginia.

Edith was born on January 4, 1886, in Pleasant Grove, Great Bridge, Princess Ann County, Virginia. She died on June 11, 1978, in Lafayette Villa Nursing Home, Norfolk, Virginia at age 92, and was buried on June 12, 1979, in Cedar Grove Cemetery, Norfolk, Virginia.

According to Census,  Russell and Edith had a residence in 1910 in Norfolk Ward 5, Norfolk Virginia. [xxiii] They had a residence from 1917 to 1918 in Norfolk, Virginia. [xxiv]   In 1920, they Lived and owned their house at  737 Reservoir Avenue, Norfolk Washington Ward, Norfolk Virginia. They were able to read and write and Speak English. Russel’s occupation was listed as a carpenter working at the Norfolk Navy Yard.  Living with Russell were Olivia Williams age 34 wife, Clarence Williams age 7 son, Edward Gray age 22 nephew machinist at Navy Yard and Sarah Williams age 75 mother.  [xxv] In 1930,  they were still living at 737 Reservoir Avenue, their home was valued at $3, 000 with no Radio Set. Russell was a carpenter working in the housing Industry. Living with them were their son Clarence age 17 and Russell’s mother Sarah age 85. [xxvi]  On April 1, 1940, they still owned their home on Reservoir Avenue valued at $1,000. Russel was listed as being a carpenter doing Government work at the Navy yard. Russell’s highest grade completed was elementary school, 7th grade. Living with them were Clarence Williams age 27 son and wife Martha age 28 and their daughter Emily Williams born May  6  1939  in  Norfolk, Virginia aged 1. Also, Sarah Williams age 94 mother [xxvii]

Russell died on December 27, 1942, in Norfolk, Norfolk County, Virginia, at age 62, He was buried in the  Norfolk Elmwood Cemetery, Section Cedar Grove, Row 56, Plot Number 12, Norfolk, Virginia.   [xxviii]
