Guy Edward "Eddie" BIRD (1918-1957) was the son of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) and Clara Myrtle GRAY (1900-1988). Eddy was born on October 8, 1918 in the Birdville, Justice Precinct 1, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. Eddy was a plumber by trade. Eddie joined the US Navy, in 1942 and was an World War II Veteran. 

According to the 1920 United States Federal Census, Guy E. Bird age one year old, lived with his parents, who lived with his grandparents, Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1861-1931) & Drusilla GAY (1868-1948). They lived on a strip of farm land at the edge of Fort Worth where they had opened a general store and had gas pumps. The farm was located in Justice Precinct 1, Tarrant County, Texas. Household members: Thomas J Bird age 57; Drusilla Bird age 51; Hugh A. Bird age 29 son; Gus J. Bird age 26 son; Guy R. Bird age24; Clara M. Bird age 20 daughter-law; Thomas J. Bird age 20 son; Johnnie W. Bird age 16 son; Drusilla Bird age 14 daughter; Richard Bird age 9 son; Frank L. Bird age 6 son; Guy E. Bird age 1 grandson; Earl A. Bird age 2/12 grandson.

According to the 1930 Census Eddie’s age eleven, father had found plumbing work in Austin, Travis County, Texas. They lived at 1703 San Jucinto Street in Dwelling Number 92, Family Number 111. Eddie attended School    and was able to Read and Write. Household members: Jeff A. Bird age 36; Clara M. Bird age 29; Edward G. Bird age 11; Earl A. Bird age 10; Myrtle E. Bird age 9; Evelyn V. Bird age 7; Jeff A. Bird age 6; Albert Bird age 5; Donald M, Bird age 2 and Drucella M. Bird age 1. 

On November 19, 1937, Eddie married Emmie "Tommye" Marie BROWN (1916-2011) in Weatherford, Parker County, Texas. Tommye was the daughter of Walter Otis BROWN (1887-1963) & Sarah Ethel HACKNEY (1893-1985)) of Smithville, Tarrant County, Texas. Emmie was born on March 14, 1916 in Smithville, Tarrant County, Texas.

According to the 1940 Census, twenty-one old Eddie and twenty-four Marie (Tommye) were married and lived in Fort Worth. Eddie had completed two years of high school and his occupation was a plumber. He worked for his father at Bird Plumbing. They owned a house valued at $200. His income was $600.

 

World War II

According to the U.S. WWII Draft Cards Young Men, 1940-1947, Eddie signed his Draft Card on October 16, 1940: Name Guy Edward Bird; Gender Male; Race White; Age 22; Relationship to Draftee Self (Head); Birth Date 8 Oct 1918; Birth Place Fort Worth, Texas, USA; Residence Place Arlington, Tarrant, Texas, USA; Registration Date 16 Oct 1940; Registration Place Arlington, Tarrant, Texas, USA; Employer Wallace Plumbing Co; Height  5’ 10”; Weight  155; Complexion Dark; Hair Color Brown; Eye Color Brown; With seven tattoos on arms; Next of Kin J.A. Bird; Household members, Name, Age Guy Edward Bird 22 and his brother J A Bird.

America entered the war just after the attack on the American fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941. Eddie enlisted on April 25, 1944 in the US Navy and was discharged on January 21, 1946. 

Eddie first Mustered aboard the USS Connolly (DE-306)  on July 30, 1944 at the Mare Island Naval Base, Vallejo, California. The ship had a Complement of 15 Officers and 183 Enlisted.

On August 25, 1945, Eddie Mustered for his last Tour of Duty during World War II on board the USS Connolly (DE-306) an Evarts-class destroyer escort of the United States Navy during World War II. She was sent off into the Pacific Ocean to protect convoys and other ships from Japanese submarines and fighter aircraft. She performed escort and antisubmarine operations in dangerous battle areas and returned home with two battle stars. The crew received the American Campaign Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Campaign Medal w/ 2 stars - WWII Victory Medal - Philippine Liberation Ribbon.

World War II Pacific Theater operations

USS Connolly operated in Hawaiian waters on training from 24 September 1944 until 22 January 1945, when she sailed for duty in the Iwo Jima operation from 19 February until 1 March. She patrolled off the island to protect shipping and providing direct support to the landings. After screening transports to Espiritu Santo, Connolly guarded the convoy to Okinawa, arriving off the Hagushi beaches on 9 April. She served on antisubmarine patrol until sailing for repairs at Ulithi on 4 May.

USS Connolly arrived off Okinawa again in the screen of a resupply convoy on 6 June 1945, then joined the screen of amphibious ships carrying out subsidiary landings in the Nansei Shoto until she reported in Leyte Gulf on 14 July to join the forces of the Philippine Sea Frontier. Between 17 July and 12 August, she voyaged to Okinawa on escort duty, then operated in the Philippines until 7 September, when she cleared Manila for Eniwetok, Pearl Harbor, San Pedro, Los Angeles, and Charleston, South Carolina.

Post War

On January 21, 1946, Eddie was discharged from the Navy and went back to work as a plumber for his father at Bird Plunging and Heating in Forth Worth.

According to the May 1, 1950 Census, Guy E. Bird, Emma M Bird, Charles E. Bird and Joyce A. Bird lived on Highway 121 From Road N S W To Hall Road in Dwelling Number 299 in Tarrant County, Texas. His occupation was the plumbing industry.

Eddie was killed on May 30, 1957 at 9:30, on Weatherford Highway. He was gun shot in the right chest and it was ruled a homicide. Funeral services were held at the Hugh M. Moore & Son Funeral Home. He was buried at the Bedford Cemetery, Tarrant County, Texas.

1. Charles Edward "Ed" BIRD was born on June 30, 1941 in Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas. Charles Ed graduated in 1959, from Birdsville High School, Birdsville, Tarrant County, Texas. In 1978, he resided in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas. Charles’ profession is a truck driver. Charles married Leta Ann HOPSON, the daughter of William Manning HOPSON & Annie Oleta TRAMMELL, on November 30, 1962 in Fort Worth, Texas. Leta was born on January 29, 1944, in Gatesville, Coryell County, Texas.

 

Charles Ed  & Leta Ann had three children:

 

i. Jolynn BIRD was born on November 3, 1963 in Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas.

ii. Lisa Ann BIRD was born on June 12, 1966 in Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas.

iii. Cheryl Marie BIRD was born on August 12, 1967 in Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas.

 

2. Joyce Ann BIRD was born on January 4, 1943 in Bedford, Tarrant County. Texas. Joyce 1st married Ervin Junior BREWER on July 6, 1957 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. He was born on March 3, 1939, in Mississippi. They had seven children. Joyce Ann next married David Howard LEE on March 12, 1977 in Bedford, Tarrant County, Texas. David was born on March 11, 1944, in Texas, the son of R. W. LEE and Gladys Marie Unknown. They had two children. 

 

Joyce Ann BIRD and Ervin Junior BREWER had seven children:

 

i. Michael Lynn BREWER was born on September 10, 1958 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas 

ii. Michele Lee BREWER was born on November 18, 1959 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas and died on March 27, 1960.
iii. Deborah Ann BREWER was born on March 15, 1961 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas and died on September 14, 1963.

iv. Ricky Dale BREWER was born on October 9, 1962 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. 

v. Patrick Ervin BREWER was born on March 22, 1964 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. 

vi. David Andrew BREWER was born on May 14, 1966 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. 

vii. Amy Marie BREWER was born on June 17, 1971 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas.

 

Joyce Ann BIRD Brewer & David Howard LEE had two children:

 

i. David Dwayne LEE was born on May 10, 1978 in Hamilton, Hamilton County, Texas.

Eddie was the grandson of Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1861-1931)   of Waco, McLennan County, Texas & Drusilla GAY (1868-1948). of Aquilla, Hill County, Texas. Thomas & Drusilla were married on November 28, 1883, in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas and had fifth-teen children. Eddie was also the granddaughter of George Charles Godwin GRAY (1874-?) of Pennsylvania & Lula Virginia "Ginny" WILLIAMS (1874-?) of Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia. George & Ginny had five children.

Eddie was the great-grandson of George BIRD Jr., (1821-1888) of Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina & Melinda Elizabeth CARROLL (1827-1906) of the York District, York County, South Carolina. George & Melinda were married in 1848 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina and had ten children. Eddie was also the great-grandson of John WILLIAMS (1840-1943) of Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia & Sarah A. CAPPS (1846-1943) of Pungo, Princess Anne County, Virginia. John & Sarah married in 1865 in Seaboard and had five children. Eddie was also, the great-grandson of Augustus "Gus" GAY (1840-1879) of Will County, Illinois & Amanda Matilda NASH (1846-1920) of Rutherford, Gibson County, Tennessee. Gus & Amanda were married in 1863 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas and had six children. Eddie was the 2nd great-grandson of

George BIRD Sr., (1774-1847) of Birdsboro, Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania & Martha "Patsy" ROBESON (1771-1777) of the Chester District, York County, South Carolina. They married in 1798 in Chester, South Carolina and had thirteen children. Also Eddie was the 2nd great-grandson of Thomas Marion CARROLL (1810-1848) of Buffalo, Pike County, Missouri & Rebecca ROBERTS (1796-1881) of Cherokee County, South Carolina. They were married in 1820 in York South Carolina and had seven children. Eddie was also the 2nd great-grandson of William Mastin WILLIAMS (1809-1859) of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia & Eliza Jane EMBERSON (1822-1856) of Hempstead County, Arkansas. William & Eliza Jane were married on September 20, 1839, in Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia and had five children.

Eddie was the 3rd great-grandson of Colonel Mark Huling BIRD (1739-1812) & Mary ROSS (1744-1790) of Hopewell Furnace, Birdsboro, Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania.

Eddie was the 4th great-grandson of Ironmaster William BIRD (1706-1761) & Brigitte HULING (1710-1792) Founder of Birdsboro. Also the 4th great-grandson of William WILLIAMS (1730-1780) and Lucy TERRY (1737-1788) of Seaboard, Princess Anne County, Virginia.

Eddie was the 6th great-grandson of John CARROLL (1667-1733) & Bernie BURKE (1668-after 1733) of Lowlands, Scotland, also the 6th great-grandson of Henrick Gerritsz "Gerrit" VAN GEZEL (1620-?) of Netherlands, also the 6th great-grandson Williams REYNIERSZEN (1638-1709) & Susannah ARENTS (1641-?) of Oldenburgerton, Netherlands.

Eddie was the 7th great-grandson of James TERRY (1676-1744) & Mary Diane ROYAL (1680-1745) of Chesterfield, Lunenburg County, Virginia.
