George BIRD Sr., (1774-1847) & Martha "Patsy" ROBESON (1771-1836) were the great-grandparents of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) and the 2nd great-grandparents of Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012).

George BIRD Sr., (1774-1847) was the son of Colonel Marcus "Mark" Huling BIRD (1739-1812) & Mary ROSS (1739–1790).  George was born in 1774 in his grandfather Ironmaster William BIRD (1709-1761)’s Bird Mansion in  Birdsboro, Amity Township, Berks County, Pennsylvania. [i] Colonel Bird established his Hopewell Furnace in 1771 on French Creek, Union Township, Berks County. The Ironmasters Mansion’s date of construction is not known.

By 1782, Colonel Bird had moved the family to Wrightstown Township then later to Delaware Mills in Fall township, (later known as Morrisville) Bucks County, Pennsylvania.  Colonel Bird’s Delaware Mills industry in Bucks County when it was advertised for sale “included seventy-four acres, a sawmill with two saws capable of cutting logs up to 60 feet long for ship planks, a gristmill with two water wheels, a nailery with seven fires, forge, a plating, slitting and gauging mill, along with buildings, dwelling houses, stores, shops etc. Additionally four tracts of land, which include plantations and the Lamberton Ferry.”

Three of George’s siblings were born there. They lived there until 1787. Colonel Bird having financial problems removed the family back to Reading. In 1788 the family removed to Wilkes County, Georgia then to a 1,000 acer tract of land on Fishing Creek, Washington County, Georgia. The family by the 1790 census living in Lincoln County, North Carilina. Colonel Bird established four iron works at High Shoals in North and South Carolina were his sons Edward and George was helping and learning the iron trade business, but by 1806 the ventures had all failed.

George’s mother Mary died on June 10, 1790, at the home of his uncle Colonel William BIRD Jr., (1757-1812) a merchant in Alexandria, Virginia. Mary was on her way to North Carolina. 

George married Martha "Patsy" ROBESON (1771-1836) the daughter of Colonel Thomas ROBESON (1740-1785)  & Mary BARTRAM (1747-1799) in 1798 in the York District, York County, South Carolina. Martha was born on September 19, 1771, in Bladen County, North Carolina. [ii]  She died on August 15, 1836 in Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina at age 64, and was buried on August 17, 1836 in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina. [iii]

In 1807, Colonel Bird was living with his son George and his family on a track of land on Puzzle Creek in Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Al were members of the Concord Baptist Church in Bostic.

George’s father Colonel Marcus "Mark" Huling BIRD (1739-1812) died on December 15, 1812 at his youngest son Georges’ home on Puzzle Creek in Bostic.

Just before George’s death, he visited his home town of Birdsboro. George died on September 25, 1847 in Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina, at age 73. He was buried on September 27, 1847 in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina.

George & Martha had twelve known Children:

i. Martha BIRD was born in 1799 and died as an infant in 1799 in York District, York County, South Carolina.

ii. Ross BIRD 10 was born in 1801 in York District, York County, South Carolina. Ross left home at the age of 18, never to be seen again by is family. According to the 1850 Free Census 1850 Ross resided in Piney Mountain, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Ross enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 16, 1861, in New Orleans, Jefferson Parish. On March 30 1862, He was Hospitalized at Richmond, Virginia. On January 11, 1862 he was reported as deserted. Ross married Margaret A. STEWART 14 on December 20, 1867, in Cherokee County, Texas.15 Margaret was born in 1801 in McLennan County, Republic of Texas and died in Concord, McLennan County, Texas. Ross died after 1873 in Concord, McLennan County, Texas.

 iii. Sarah “Sally” BIRD (1803-1850) 16 was born in 1803 in York District, York County, South Carolina, died in 1850 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina, at age 47, She was   buried in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina.

Sarah married Doctor David CARROLL (1789-1822) 17 the son of Joseph Charles CARROLL (1760-1838) 18 & Nancy EVANS (1761-1803) 19 about 1820 in the York Antioch Baptist Church, York County, South Carolina. David was born in 1787 in the York District, York County, South Carolina, 9 and died on October 16, 1822,  in Jumping Branch, York District, York County, South Carolina, 9 at age 35, He was buried on October 19, 1822,  in the Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Blacksburg, Cherokee County, South Carolina. 9 His estate was probated on December 2, 1822.  Sally, the widow of David Carroll relinquished any diary claim to the track of land on Jumping Branch that her husband had deeded to Abraham Hardin. in December 2, 1822.

iv. Emmaline "Emela" BIRD (1804-1850) 20 was born in 1804 in the York District, York County, South Carolina.20 She died in 1850 in in Piney Mountains, Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina, at age 46, and was buried in 1850 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina.

V. Charles Bartholomew BIRD (1806-1882) 21 was born on November 12, 1806, in York District, York County, South Carolina. 22 He was christened on November 12, 1806 in the Bostic Baptist Church, York County, South Carolina. He had a residence in 1840 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. 24 He had a residence in 1850 in Piney Mountains, Rutherford County, North Carolina. 23 He had a residence in 1860 in McLennan County, Texas. 25 He resided at Post Office Waco in 1870, east of the Brazos River, McLennan County, Texas. 26 He resided as rancher, head of house in 1880 in McLennan County, Texas. 27  Charles was member of the Concord Baptist Church in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina and then later the Concord Baptist Church in Wortham Bend, McLennan County, Texas. Charles died on January 20, 1882 in Wortham Bend, San Saba County, Texas, at age 75, He was buried on January 28, 1882 in the Wortham Bend Baptist Cemetery, China Spring, Wortham Bend, McLennan County, Texas. 9 His will was probated on January 26, 1882 in China Spring, McLennan County, Texas.   9  He owned property in North Carolina, South Carolina and owned a little over 900 acres of land at Wortham Bend, Texas, on the Brazos River.

Charles married Margaret CHITWOOD (1815-1853)  28 the daughter of Jesse CHITWOOD (1794-1856) 29  & Sarah HORTON (1798-1882) 29 on January 2, 1837 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina.30 Margaret was born in 1815 and  died on May 12, 1853 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina, at age 38. She was buried on May 14, 1853 in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina.

Charles & Margaret had eight known children:

Reverent J. BIRD (1837–?); Greenberry BIRD (1838–1859); Artlessia "Arta" BIRD (1840–1854); Mary Ann BIRD (1842–1910); Miller BIRD (1845–1920); Leander Smith M. BIRD (1847–1910); Margaretta Jane BIRD (1849–1896); R. J. BIRD (1850–?).

Widower Charles next married Sarah Saphronia HORTON (1834-1907) 29  the daughter of William HORTON (1806-1870) & Drusilla MELTON (1806-1881) 31  They married on November 23, 1853 in Rutherford, McLennan County, Texas. Sarah was born on July 24, 1834 in Rome, Floyd County, Georgia. She was christened in the Baptist Church and died on April 27, 1907, in Wortham Bend, McLennan County, Texas, at age 72. She was buried on April 30, 1907 in the Wortham Bend Cemetery, McLennan County, Texas.

Charles & Sarah had twelve known children:

Nancy Arminda BIRD (1855–1924); George Pinckney BIRD (1857–1924); Albert Sidney BIRD (1859–1925); Susanna Victoria BIRD (1861–1938); Sarah Caladonia BIRD (1862–1864); Julius Alexander BIRD (1864–1867); William Logan BIRD (1865–1867); Charles Horton Oliver BIRD (1867–1933); Belle Zora BIRD (1869–1882); Martin Luther BIRD (1871–1896); Rufus Edward BIRD (1874–1888); Affa Rebecca BIRD (1876–1876).

vi. Catherine BIRD (1807-1843) was born in 1807 in York District, York County, South Carolina. She married Joseph WEST ((1805–) on July 18, 1838 in Lincolnton, Lincoln County, North Carolina. Catherine died on March 6, 1843, in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina, 32 at age 36. She was buried in March 1843 in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Rutherfordton, Rutherford County, North Carolina. 32

vii. Martin Van Buren BIRD (1810-1880) 33 was born on May 17, 1810, in the York District, York County, South Carolina. 34  In 1849, Martin and his younger brother Wilson ventured out to the California God Rush.  Martin was a clergyman, farmer, and rancher. 37  According the 1860 Census, he had a farm in McLennan County, Texas. 36  In 1870 He resided at Post Office Waco on a ranch east of the Brazos River, McLennan County, Texas.  35  

Martin married Mary Henrietta TEAL (1833-1901) 38 the daughter of John TEAL (1810-1850) 39 & Elizabeth DAVIS (1811-1839) 40 on January 20, 1856 in Waco Springs, McLennan County, Texas. 41 Mary was born on October 7, 1833 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina.,42 died on March 23, 1901 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. at age 67, and was buried on March 25, 1901 in Oakwood Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, Texas.

Martin died on March 31, 1880 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, 9 at age 69, and was buried on April 2, 1880 in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Waco, McLennan County, Texas. 9

Martin & Mary had six known children:

Thedore BIRD (1856–1856); James Hamilton BIRD (1858–1928); Cornelia Josephine BIRD (1862–1929); Florence Ophelia BIRD (1868–1870); Nannie Alma BIRD (1873–1891); Minnie Ophelia BIRD (1880–1880).

 

viii. Wilson Robeson BIRD (1812-1887)  43 was born on March 1, 1812 9 and christened on March 18, 1812 in the York District, York County, South Carolina. 44   In 1849, he owned property in York County, South Carolina. Also, in 1849 Wilson and his older brother Martin ventured out to the California God Rush. According to Census he had a Farm in 1860 east of the Brazos River, McLennan, Texas.  47  According to the 1870 Census, Wilson home was listed as Post Office Waco, East of the Brazos River, McLennan, Texas. Dwelling Number 138; Occupation Farmer; Male Citizen over 21, Yes; Personal Estate Value $350; Real Estate Value $5000; Wife Nancy age 35, children Alabama age 13, John age 11, Evelina age 8 and Joseph Bird age 4.  46  On June 17, 1880 Wilson was listed as a widower with occupation as a Farmer living with his Joseph his fourteen-year-old son, who was working on the farm. Also, his brother George, also listed as a farmer in Enumeration District 109, McLennan, Texas  45

Wilson married Nancy B. TEAL (1835-1870) 48 the daughter of John TEAL 39 & Elizabeth Davis,40 on April 23, 1833 in Rutherford County, North Carolina..49 Nancy was born on August 28, 1835 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina.,9 died on November 30, 1870 in Chalk Bluff, McLennan County, Texas.9 at age 35, and was buried on December 1, 1870 in White Rock, Moore Cemetery, McLennan County, Texas..9

Wilson died on January 7, 1887, in Chalk Bluff, McLennan County, Texas, 9 at age 74, and was buried on January 10, 1887, in the Moore Cemetery, White Rock, McLennan County, Texas.9

Wilson & Nancy had five known children: 

Alabama BIRD (1856–1900); John Milton BIRD (1859–1870); Sarah Evaline BIRD (1861–1876); Newton B. BIRD (1865–1914); Joseph Wilson BIRD (1866–1942).

 

ix. Elizabeth "Eliza" BIRD (1814-1860) 16 was born on January 11, 1814, in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. She died in 1860 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, at age 46.

Elizabeth married Isom B. STEWART (1813-1853) the son of John STEWART (1790-1853) & Sarah MULLINAX (1790-?). Isom was born in 1813 and died in 1853 in the York District, York County, South Carolina, at age 40.

Isom & Elizabeth had six known children:

William B. STEWART (1839–?); Amanda C. STEWART (1841–1863); Martha A. STEWART (1843–?); James M. STEWART (1845–1880); Mary Eliza STEWART (1848–1901); Margaret A. STEWART (1850–1886)

 

x. Merish Martha BIRD (1815-?) 50 was born in 1815 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina and died in Saint Louis, Saint Louis County, Missouri. 51 In 1870 she resided at Residence Post Office Clarksville in Clarksville, Red River County, Texas. 51

Merish married Joseph L. VAN DYKE (1815-?) 52 on December 23, 1829 in Lincoln, Rutherford County, North Carolina. 52 Joseph was born about 1815 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina and died in Saint Louis, Saint Louis County, Missouri.

Joseph & Marish had two known children:

Andrew VAN DYKE (1856–?); Emma VAN DYKE (1861–?)

 

xi. Arminda "Mandy" BIRD (1817-?) 16 was born in 1817 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Mandy must have died as an infant or very young.

 

xii. Marcus "Mark" B. BIRD (1818-1892)  53 was born on June 28, 1818, in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. 54  In 1838, he was listed as a planter, in Rutherford. Mark migrated in 1852 from Rutherford County to Tehuacana Creek, Waco Springs, McLennan County, Texas.  60  In 1852, he was listed as a rancher in McLennan County, Texas. He had a residence in 1860 in McLennan County, Texas. 55 In 1853 Mark was listed as a member of the Tehuacana Baptist Church, McLennan County, Texas. 61 

On April 29, 1856, Mark married Elizabeth Emmaline Jane STEPHEN (1839-1885) 66  the daughter of James R. STEPHEN (1795-1857) & Mary Sarah WALKER (1796-1859) in Cherokee County, Texas. 67 Elizabeth was born on January 31, 1839, in Chapel Hill, Washington County, Republic of Texas. She died on December 22, 1885, in East Waco, McLennan County, Texas. at age 46, and was buried on December 24, 1885, in the Greenwood Cemetery, East Waco, McLennan County, Texas.

Mark & Elizabeth had fourteen known children:

Edward Walker BIRD (1857–1931); Sarah "Sally" Elizabeth BIRD (1858–1937); Carrie Ann BIRD (1859–1921); Isaac Newton BIRD (1860–1898); Andrew Jackson BIRD (1862–1949); Emaline BIRD (1864–1932); Marcus Lafayette BIRD (1865–1939); Wilson B. BIRD (1867–1914); Samuel BIRD (1868–1931); Alice BIRD (1869–1922); Laura BIRD McCown (1872–1955); Nora BIRD (1879–1947); Jefferson "Jeff" BIRD (1880–?); James "Jim" BIRD (1882–?)

The 1860 United States Federal Census, dated June 9, 1860 for Waco, McLennan County, Texas, list Mark living in dwelling #171; Family #171; Age in 1860, 40; Birth Year about 1820; Birthplace, North Carolina; Home in 1860, McLennan, Texas; Gender, Male; Post Office, Waco; Value of real estate, $225; Occupation, farming; Household Members, Mark Bird, age 40; Elizabeth B. Bird, age 19; Edward W. Bird, age 3; Sallie Bird, age 2; Carrie A. Bird 9/12  62  The 1862 U.S. IRS Tax Assessment Lists, list Mark owning and living on a 266 acre ranch two stills, valued at $100.36, in District #3, McLennan, County, Texas,  65 

On March 30, 1863, Mark patented land in Milam, McLennan, County, Texas. According to the Texas General Land Office, Land Grant Abstract Search:  Abstract Number, #170; District/Class: Robertson Scrip; File Number: 000785; Original Grantee, Bird, Mark; Patentee, Bird, Mark; Title Date: District, Patent Date, 30 Mar 1863; Patent No: 337; Patent Vol, 16; Certificate; Part Section; Survey/Blk/Tsp; Acres, 105; Adjacent to his own County Acres.  63

According to the July 27, 1870 Census, Marcus (first time used in any recorded records that I have found) resides East of the Brazos River, McLennan County, Texas. Living in Dwelling #417; Family #424; Name: Marcus Bird; Birth Year about 1818; Age in 1870, 52; Birthplace, North Carolina; Home in 1870, East of The Brazos River, McLennan, Texas; Race, White; Gender, Male; Value of real estate, $3000; Value of personal property, $1000; Post Office, Waco; Household Members, Name Age; Marcus Bird, age 52; Elizabeth Bird, age 39, wife, keeping house, born in TX; Edward Bird, age 14, son, born in TX; Sally Bird, age 12, daughter, born in TX; Carrie Bird, age 11, daughter, born in TX; Newton Bird, age 9, son, born in TX; Andrew Bird, age 8, son, born in TX; Emeline Bird, age 6, daughter, born in TX; Marcus Bird, age 5, son, born in TX; Wilson Bird, age 4, son; Samuel Bird, age 2; Alice Bird, age 6/12, daughter.).  56   64

Mark signed his will on April 6, 1892 as “Mark” according to the McLennan County Court House Records. 59  Mark died on June 23, 1892, in East Waco, McLennan County, Texas, 9 at age 73. Seven years after Elizabeth did. He was buried on June 26, 1892, in the Greenwood Cemetery, next to his wife in East Waco, McLennan County, Texas. 9

 

xiii. Reverent George BIRD Jr., (1821-1888)  68 was born on March 21, 1821 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. 69  George Jr., was a planter, rancher, teacher, and Baptist minister.  He had a residence in 1840 in Rutherford County, North Carolina. 74

George married Melinda Elizabeth CARROLL (1827-1906) 82  the daughter of Thomas Marion CARROLL (1795-1878) 83  Rebecca Violet ROBERTS (1796-1881) 84 sometime after February 1848 and before November 1850 in Rutherford, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Melinda was born on June 21, 1827 in the York District, York County, South Carolina. 85 Melinda's brother, William H. CARROLL, received, as guardian, her share of her father's estate in South Carolina. Melinda was still under 21 and a minor. Melinda was a lifelong member of the Concord Baptist Church. George & Melinda were divorced sometime after their daughter Georgia died in 1876. Melinda next married Henry Clay Stephenson (1832-1910) on 16 October 1892 in MacLennan County, Texas.

Melinda died on August 20, 1906, in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, 70 at age 79. She was buried on August 20, 1906, next to first husband George, in the Concord Cemetery, Bellmead, McLennan County, Texas. 70

George & Melina had eleven known children:

Martha Lou Elizabeth BIRD (1849–1932); Rebecca B. BIRD (1851–1914); Marcus "Mark" Lafayette BIRD (1855–1909); Arminda "Minda" Nancy BIRD (1855–1924); Mary Jane BIRD (1857–1948); Nancy Melinda "Arminda" BIRD (1859–1924); Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1861–1931); Elizabeth "Lizzie" BIRD (1863–1917); Artelicia Artlissa "Lissa" BIRD (1864–1917); Julia Ann BIRD (1868–1914); Georgia B. BIRD (1872–1876)

According to the 1850 Census, of Rutherford County, George was living next to his brother Mark and his sister Emmaline. 1850 Census: Name: George Bird; Age: 28; Estimated Birth Year: circa 1822; Birth Place, North Carolina; Gender. Male; Home in 1850, Piney Mountains, Rutherford County, North Carolina Census 1850 - free: 1850, Piney Mountains, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Occupation: 1850, Rancher & Baptist Minister.  20  In November of 1850, George sold his land in Rutherford County, North Carolina.  79   George and Melinda and Mark migrated in the same wagon train to Waco Springs, McLennan County, Texas. Their daughter Rebecca was born in 1851 in Alabama. They purchased Texas Homestead Land on the History Tehuacana Creek, McLennan County for twenty-five cents per acer.  80

In 1856, George, according to a land grant search of McLennan County, at the Texas General Land Office, George Bird, on December 13, 1856, patented 320 acres of Texas Homestead Land. George Bird was the Original Grantee and Patentee of abstract number 117, in the Robertson 3rd District, file Number, 002159, Patent No, 777; Patent Vol, 13. Also, in 1856, George was elected as a McLennan County Trustee of School District 5. George was also a charter member of the Tehuacana Baptist Church. George was a church Delegate to the Church Association Meeting. The Tehuacana Church was later known as the Concord Baptist Church.

According to the 1860 Census,  George resided at Post Office Waco, McLennan County, Texas. Dwelling Number 420; Family Number 420; Occupation Farmer; Real Estate Value $780; Personal Estate Value $492; Household members, Geo Bird, M.E. Bird age 32, M.E. Bird age 10 all born in North Carolina, Rebecca Bird age 9 born in Alabama, M.F. Bird age 5, M. J. Bird, M.M. Bird age 1 all born in Texas and J.C Harris age 21 a teacher born in Missouri  73 George was living next door to his brother Martin who was listed as a farmer with real estate value of $820 and personal property of $1915.

According to the July 25, 1870 United States Federal Census conducted by the Sheriff: Name            George Bird, age in 1870, 49; Birth Date about 1821; Birthplace, North Carolina; Dwelling Number 388; Home in 1870, East of the Brazos River, McLennan, Texas; Race, White; Gender, Male; Post Office, Waco; Occupation, Farmer; Male Citizen Over 21 ,Yes; Personal Estate Value $800; Real Estate Value $1000; Household members, George age 49, Melvina age 43 keeping house, Martha age 21, Marcus age 15, Mary age 13, Nancy age 11, Thomas age 9, Lizzie age 7, Julia age 4, Susan Robertson age 21 a teacher born in Alabama and James McGee age 24 a farm laborer born in Georgia.  72

According to the 1880 McLennan County Census, George was living with his brother Wilson and Wilson's son on Wilson's farm.1880 Census: Name, George Bird; Home in 1880, McLennan, Texas; Age, 59; Estimated Birth Year, circa 1821; Birthplace, North Carolina; Relation to Head of Household, Brother; Father's birthplace, Pennsylvania; Mother's birthplace, North Carolina; Occupation, Farmer; Marital Status, Divorced; Race, White; Gender, Male; Household Members, W. R. Bird, age, 68; Joseph Bird, age, 14; George Bird, 59.  75 81

On January 22, 1799, Ironmaster Mark BIRD (1739-1812) made a gift of three slaves to George BIRD (1774-1847) in York County, South Carolina. The two male slaves were likely used in the iron ore business. Frank was a hammer man and Bash was a wagoner. Part of the Transcription of text in document: “Know all men by these presents that I Mark Bird of the state of So. Carolina & County of York of my own free will & accord for diverse causes me hereunto moving, but more especially for the love I bear to my son George Bird of the same State and County....”

George died on September 25, 1847 in Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina, at age 73. He was buried on September 27, 1847 in the Concord Baptist Church Cemetery, Bostic, Rutherford County, North Carolina.
