George Augustus “Gus” GAY (1840-1879) & Amanda Matilda NASH (1846-1920) were parents of Drusilla GAY (1868-1948), the grandparents of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) and the 2nd great-grandparents of Evelyn Virginia BIRD (1922-2012). Also, Amanda was the 10th cousin 2 times removed of Kirk Louis LINTON (1914-1987).

 

Parents

George Augustus "Gus" GAY (1840-1879) (1) was the son of George Washington GAY (1808-1899) (2) & Katherine Bud ENDERS (1807-1870). (2) George was the son of Thomas Jefferson GAY (1774–1838) & Mary BRANTLEY (1785–1885) George was born in 1808 in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia and July 27, 1899 in Will County, Illinois. He was buried in the Mound Grove Cemetery, Kankakee, Kankakee County, Illinois.

Katherine was the daughter of Peter Isaac ENDERS (1800–1858) & Katharina "Katie" Margaretha SCHUSTER (1809–1859). Peter was born on November 15, 1800, in Brigidau, Stryj, Galizien Austria, He and family emigrated to America and he died on September 24, 1858 in Florida, Montgomery County, New York (3). Katharina was born on November 12, 1809 in Neu Babylon, Galicia, Austria and died October 7, 1859 in Florida, Montgomery County, New York.  Gus was born in 1840 in Will, Will County, Illinois and died in 1879 in Brazos, McLennan County, Texas, at age 39. Scottish Emigrants

Gus was descendent from a long line of wondering Scottish emigrants. Gus’ 5th great-grandfather Thomas GAY (1590–1652) was born in 1590, in Cardross, Dunbarton, Scotland and emigrated to Isle Wight County, Virginia in 1622.

Thomas’ son, Henry GAY I, (1615–1669) had emigrated with his father from Scotland to Isle Wight County, Virginia. He later migrated to Nansemond County, Virginia and died in Isle Wight County, Virginia.

Henry’s son, Henry II, (1640–1688) was born in Nansemond County, Virginia and migrated New Kent Island, Maryland.

His son Henry III GAY (1663–1735) migrated back to Isle of Wight County, Virginia. Henry the III’s son Thomas GAY Sr., (1690–1754) lived is hole live in Isle of Wight County, Virginia.

His son Thomas Jr., (1723-1784) was born in Isle of Wight County, Virginia, migrated to Bute County, North Carolina, then to Franklin, Heard County, Georgia where he fought in the Revolutionary War with the Georgia Militia.

Thomas’s son Thomas Jefferson GAY (1774-1838), Gus’ grandfather, was born in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia, then relocated to Jefferson County, Georgia. Then to Northampton County, North Carolina. Next to Rapides Parish, Louisiana.

Early Life

Gus’ father George was born in 1808 in Franklin, Heard County, Georgia. The 1810 Census list the family was living in Franklin County, North Carolina. The 1820 census list the family living in Northampton County, North Carolina. The 1830 Census list the family living in Rapides Parish, Louisiana. George, occupation druggist clerk, (for unknown reason) ventured to Stockbridge, Windsor County, Vermont. He then relocated to Albany and married Katherine Bud ENDERS (1807-1870) on August 17, 1831 in Albany, Albany County, New York.  Where they lived on the Enders farm. George later stated that they had “witnessed the November 13, 1833 meteor shower.”

George & Katherine’s first child Harriet GAY (1837–1860) was born in 1837, in Missouri.

George’s father, Thomas Jefferson GAY (1774–1838) died the next year in 1838 in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana leaving land and money to George.

George & Katherine’s second child, Gus was born in 1840 on his father’s 160-acre farm in Will, Will County, in Northeast Illinois on the Kankakee River.

On May 20, 1841 George received a Land Patent Document number 4374, from the Land office in Chicago, Illinois for and other 160 acres of land in Will County, adjoining his own land.

Keeping his land holding in Will County, Illinois, George occupation Druggist, relocated to Texas. According to the 1850 Census, George had moved the family down to Texas and took advantage of its 25 cent an acre land. George was listed as living in Austin, Travis County, Texas. His occupation was a farmer in the agriculture industry in dwelling Number 291, family number 291. Family members; George W. Gay age 42 farmer; Catharine Gay age 39, keeping house; Harriet age 13; George age 11; William age 9; Francis age 7; Steven age 3 and David age 1.  According to the 1850 U.S., Selected Federal Census Non-Population Schedules, 1850-1880 for George W Gay was owned a 100-acer farm in Austin with 1 horse, 1 ass, 16 milking cows, 2 working oxen, value of livestock $460, 46 bushels oats, 20 bushels barley, 367 bushels Indian corn.

Gay, Inferred Mother Cathrine B. Gay, Household members: Geo W. Gay age 53, Cathrine B. Gay        50. Geo Gus Gay age 22, William Gay age 19, Frances Gay, Stephen Gay age 14, Dado Gay age  13. 

 

Civil War

On September 30, 1861, Gus Bird enlisted as a Private in Company G, 4th Texas Infantry Regiment Confederacy State of America. The 4th Texas Infantry Regiment was a unit of Confederate States Army infantry volunteers that was created in 1861 and fought in the Army of Northern Virginia during the American Civil War. As part of the famous Texas Brigade, under the command of Colonel (later Brigadier General) John Bell HOOD (1831-1879).

The 4th Texas became part of the Texas Brigade under the command of Louis Wigfall. On July 19, 1861 and in September also in October Private Gay was listed as being paid by Captain C. H. Hardy. On August 31, 1861, the brigade  embarked to Dumfries, Virginia, arriving in November 1861 and spent the winter drilling. At this time, hundreds of the soldiers fell sick, which was a common occurrence in newly formed Civil War era military units. In March 1862, Hood was promoted to command the Texas brigade. Marshall became colonel and Captain J. C. G. Key of Company A was promoted major.    

The Regiment's and Gus had their first combat in the Peninsula Campaign. On May 7, 1862, they fought at the Battle of Eltham's Landing in New Kent County, Virginia. On May 31 and June 1, 1862, the Regiment fought at Seven Pines, in Henrico County, Virginia. On June 27, 1862, Gaines's Mill in Hanover County, Virginia.   Gus Muster in and fought in all three battles. The Battle of Gaines’s Mill started early in the day then “As the sun was starting to go down, William Whiting's division achieved the breakthrough on Longstreet's front. Brig. Gen. John Bell Hood's Texas Brigade moved forward swiftly and aggressively and broke a hole in the line. Four of the nine regimental commanders in Whiting's two brigades were killed or wounded, as well as Captain William Balthis, the division's chief of artillery. Pickett's brigade also succeeded in its second assault of the day. Confederate breakthroughs on their center and right could not be countered, and the Union line crumbled. A total of nine Union regimental commanders were killed or mortally wounded in the battle. Most of the 4th New Jersey, along with its colonel, were surrounded and taken prisoner by Longstreet's division; a lieutenant colonel assumed command of the remaining men in the regiment.

According to the Regiment’s Surgeon Report, Gus was received a severe wound to his left foot while engaged at Boatswains Swamp with the Second Maine Regiment. He was removed to Richmond and on June 29, 1862, he was admitted to the Chimboram Hospital #3, Richmond, Virginia, with gunshot to foot. He was furlong to heal and on July 12, 1862 he embarked to Atlanta, Georgia and spent five months recovering there before being discharged from the Confederate Army. Gus made his way back to Hill County, Texas. (36)

Post War

In 1863, Gus married Amanda Matilda NASH (1846-1920) (5) the daughter of John Bolin NASH (1807-1880) (6) & Jane FERGUSON (1808-1876) (7) in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas. Amanda was born on August 23, 1846 in Rutherford, Gibson County, Tennessee. (8) She died on March 11, 1922, in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas (9) at age 75, and was buried on May 13, 1922 in Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. (10)

According to the July 16, 1867, Texas, U.S., Voter Registration Lists, 1867-1869, George Gay, Birthplace Illinois, registered in Goliad County on Line Number 53 to vote. (37)

According to the 1870 Census dated September 22, 1870, for Brazos, McLennan County, Texas. Gus Bird lived at post office, Bryan; estimated birth year about 1840; age in 1870, 30; birthplace, Illinois; home in 1870, Bryan Brazos, Texas; Race, white; gender, male, occupation farmer; value of real estate, $1, 000, value of personal estate $200; Household Members, name and age, Gus Gay age 30 farmer, wife Amanda Gay, age 23 keeping house, Harriett Gay age 6, Catherine Gay age 3, Drusilla Gay age 2, David Gay age 4/12 . Gus’ parents were listed with a occupation of druggist in Precinct 3, Post Office Wheelock, Robertson, Texas with Catherine his wife and two sons Steven R. age 22 Gay and David P. Gay age 21.

Gus & Amanda had six known children:

i. Harrett GAY was born in 1864 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas and died in Brazos, McLennan County, Texas (11)

                 ii.  Catherine GAY (12) was born in 1867 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas.

 

iii. Drusilla GAY (1868-1948) (13) was born on September 8, 1868 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas, (14) She died on February 4, 1948 at 1014 East 53rd Street, Austin Travis County, Texas (15) at age 79. She was buried on February 6, 1948, in the David Crockett Section, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Texas. (16)

On November 28, 1883, Drusilla married Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1861-1931) (17) the son of George BIRD Jr., (1821-1931) (18) & Melinda Elizabeth CARROLL (1827-1906) (19) in Hillsboro, Hill County, Texas. (20) Thomas was born on March 10, 1861 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas., (21) died on September 29, 1931 in Edinburg, Hidalgo County, Texas, (22) at age 70. He was buried on October 3, 1931 in Memorial Lawn, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Texas. (23)

Drusilla & Thomas had fifteen children: Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1884–1884); Robert V. BIRD (1885–1886); Gertrude "Gertie" BIRD (1886–1912); Susie BIRD (1888–1889); Albert BIRD (1889–1908); Hugh Orlando BIRD (1890–1964)Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893–1954); Harriet "Hattie" Melinda BIRD (1898–1990); Guy Rowland BIRD (1898–1949); Thomas Jefferson BIRD Jr., (1899–1969); Pastor John "Johnny" William BIRD (1903–1973); Drusilla Gay BIRD (1905–1991); Annabel BIRD (1909–1910); Richard "Dick" Bruno BIRD (1910–1979); Pastor Frank Lafayette BIRD Sr., (1913–1994). 

 iv.  David GAY (1870-1915) was born on May 1, 1870 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas and died in 1915, in Dallas County, Texas. at age 45. (24) 

 v.  Thomas Jefferson GAY (1871-1940) (25) was born on November 11, 1871, in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas. (26) He died on July 3, 1940, in San Antonio, Bexar County, Texas age 68, and was buried in July 1940 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas. (27) Thomas married Julia A. APPELQUIST circa 1900 in McLennan County, Texas. Julia was born about 1880 in Waco, and died on April 8, 1910 in Waco, McLennan County, Texas, age 30. They had one known child, Marion Edward GAY (1907–1963). 

 vi.  George William GAY (1872-1934) (28) was born on February 23, 1872 in Aquilla, Hill County, Texas. (29) He died on December 19, 1934 in Precinct 1, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, (30) at age 62. On June 11, 1895 George married Minnie Lillie KIRKSEY (31) on December 21, 1893 in Ellis County, Texas. (31)  Minnie (32) was the daughter of Alexander Currey KIRKSEY (33) & Mary Jane PILLOW, (33) in Cook County, Illinois. (34) Minnie was born on April 4, 1874 in Lauderdale County, Tennessee (35) and died on April 25, 1930 in Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas, at age 56. They had three known children: Wallace Claude GAY (1894–1933); Nellan Currey GAY (1896–?); Mary V. GAY (1897–1964).

 

Death

Gus died in died in early in 1879, from complication from the wound he received in the Civil War. He died in Brazos, McLennan County, Texas. At the present time there is no record of were he was buried. On June 11, 1880, he was listed in Probate Records stating that he and his father are associated with a track of land in District 1, Austin, Texas.

 

Amanda Matilda NASH (1846-1920)

On August 31 Aug 1879, Gus’ widow Amanda married Jefferson "Jeff" Amanuel REYNOLDS (1857–1942) in Brazos County, Texas. Jeff was the son of Jefferson Amanuel REYNOLDS (1830–1857) & Sarah Ann VINZANT (1835–1894). Jeff was born on January 31, 1857 in Smith County, Mississippi. In 1860, the family relocated and settled in Possum Walk, Trinity County, Texas. He was the owner of the Reynolds Hotel & Livery Stable in Groveton. Jeff died on October 11, 1942, at age 85, in Groveton, Trinity County, Texas.  He was buried in October 1942 in the Glenwood Cemetery, Groveton, Trinity County, Texas.

According to the June 8, 1880 Census, Amanuel Reynolds age 27 was the Head of House in Dwelling Number 128, in Brazos County, Texas, with wife Amanda M. Reynolds age 35. Her occupation was keeping house and she was sick  and in labor. Household members Harritt Gay age 16 at home; Drucilla Gay age 12 at home; David Gay age 10 farm laborer; George W. Gay age 8 farm laborer; Thomas J. Gay age 6 at school. Also living and working as farm laborers were four black men; Clark Ward age 26 born in Arkansas; Dagley Jackson age 21 born in Alabama; Edward Brookshire age 25 born in Tennessee; James Monroe age 21 born in Alabama.  

Amanda & Jeff had five children:

i.  Jennie V. Reynolds was born in June 1880 in Brazos County, Texas. (33)

 

 ii.  Tinnie V. REYNOLDS (1880-1937) (40) was born on June 9, 1880 in Waksahatchy County, Texas. (41) and died on August 3, 1937 in Fort Worth Tarrant County, Texas at age 57. Tinnie married Bob Robinson on September 23, 1913.

 

iii.  Minnie Bell REYNOLDS  (1884-1972)  was born on April 18, 1884 in Waksahatchy, Trinity County, Texas, died on May 7, 1972 in Crockett, Houston County, Texas at age 88, and was buried in May 1972 in Groveton, Trinity County, Texas. Minnie married William Thomas LODEN on May 29, 1905 in Groveton, Trinity County, Texas. William was born on February 24, 1866 in Gainesville, Hall County, Georgia and died on August 15, 1926 in Groveton, Trinity County, Texas at age 60. (42) 

 

 iv.  Bennie Belle REYNOLDS (1886-1975) (43) was born on March 3, 1886 in Waksahatchy, Trinity County, Texas (44) She married John William NASH (1875–1953) the son of WILLIAM PAYTON NASH (1851–1939) & Sarah Elizabeth PRESTRIDGE (1858–1923) John was born on March 14, 1875 in Macy, Brazos County, Texas and died on July 6, 1953 in Hobart, Kiowa County, Oklahoma, Bennie next married Duncan WING (1883–1969). Duncan was the son of Lorenzo Sumner WING (1839–1914) & Jane Mary BUCK (1843–1901). Duncan was born on August 29, 1883 in Michigan and died on September 20, 1969 in San Bernardino County, California. Bennie died on January 8, 1975 in Riverside, San Bernardino County, California, at age 88 and is buried in the Greenwood Memorial Park San Diego, Plot Cathedral Mausoleum-Walnut Room, San Diego County, California.

 

 vi.  Annie Lou REYNOLDS (1888-1943) (45) was born on March 20, 1888 in Waxahachie, Ellis County, Texas, (44) died in July 1973 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana (46) at age 85, and was buried in Forest Park. (47) Annie married John Bennett BEACH (1882-1943) (48) on December 4, 1910, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. John was born on October 2, 1882 in Mount Vernon, Knox County, Ohio (49) and died on May 6, 1943 in Shreveport, Caddo Parish, Louisiana, at age 60. Annie & John had three children: Vivian Evelyn Belle BEACH (1911–1961); Annie Margaret BEACH (1915–2004); Robert Rex BEACH (1920–1993).

Divorced

Between 1888 and 1900, Amanda and Jeff were divorced. Amanda moved from Waksahatchy, Trinity County, Texas to Fort Worth.

According to the 1900 United States Federal Census:  Amanda was living in Fort Worth, It listed Amanda M. Reynolds, age 53, a Widow and Head of House, born August 1846, in Tennessee.  Family Number 167, she rented the house at 406 Nichols Street, Ward 6, Tarrant County, Texas. She could read and write. She was the mother of 11 living children. Household members; Amanda M Reynolds age 53, David Gay age 30, Thomas J. Gay age 27, Tinnie V. Reynolds age 10, Jennie V. Reynolds age 10, Minnie B.  age 6. Bonnie B. Reynolds age 4, Annie L. Reynolds age 2.

Jeff remarried On August 31, 1904, to Francis "Fannie" Bell Sweats (1863–1904) in Brazos, McLennan County, Texas.

Oklahoma

Amanda’s daughter Drusilla GAY (1868-1948) in 1883 had married Thomas Jefferson BIRD (1861-1931).  The family had ventured up to the 1893 and 1889 Oklahoma Land Rushes. They ventured up again in 1910 after their daughter Annabel BIRD (1909–1910) died.  died in   in a covered wagon moving from Texas to Oklahoma.  Thomas had several bad years farming in Texas and was hoping for some better soil and a little more rain in Oklahoma. Their son, Richard "Dick" Bruno BIRD (1910–1979) was born in Oklahoma. By 1913 the family had moved back to Fort Worth.

Drusilla’s mother, Amanda moved her hole family in a covered wagon along with them to Oklahoma City. According to the 1910 Census Amanda M. Reynolds age 63, Widowed and Head of House living and renting at 624 West Third Street, Enumeration District Number 0206, Oklahoma City Ward 2, Oklahoma. She was able to read and to Write. Father's Birthplace, Tennessee. Mother's Birthplace Tennessee. Household members: Amanda M. Reynolds age 63, Jefferson Reynolds age 37, Anna L. Reynolds age 22, Bernice Reynolds age 24, Mary B. Owsley age 27, Kate Owsley age 6, Walter Beaty age 25

Death

By 1915, the family had moved back to Texas and were living in Dallas County.  Amanda’s son David GAY (1870-1915) died in Dallas County, Texas. at age 45.

According to the 1920 Census, Thomas Jefferson GAY, age 45, was listed as the Head of House living on Carliole Hall Street, Dallas Precinct 25, Dallas, Texas. Amanda Reynolds age 73, was listed as mother and George Washington GAY, age 46 listed as brother. Thomas and George’s occupation was listed as painting and paper.

Amanda Matilda NASH (1846-1920) died on March 11, 1922, in Dallas, Dallas County, Texas (9) at age 75. She was buried on May 13, 1922, in Plot Section 18, Stephen Austin Lawn, Mount Olivet Cemetery, Fort Worth, Tarrant County, Texas. (10) 

 

 

1860 United States Federal Census for Precinct 2, Post Office Wheelock, Robertson County, Texas, for George Washington GAY (1808-1899) list his occupation as druggist and his son George Augustus “Gus” GAY (1840-1879) as a clerk. George’s Real Estate Value was $4,600 and his Personal Estate Value was $3,200
