Adjutant General Henry STONESTREET (1752-1812) [i] was the son of Butler STONESTREET (1703–1755)  [ii] & Jane EDELEN (1718-1770). On December 18, 1771, Henry STONESTREET (1752-1812) of Baltersea Plantation, Charles County, Maryland, dinned at Mount Vernon Plantation with Martha and General George WASHINGTON (1732-1798). Henry and his sister Mary STONESTREET (1738-1805) and her husband Humphrey PEAKE (1732-1785) of Willow Springs Plantation, Gum Springs, Fairfax County, Virginia. were guests of at dinner at Mount Vernon, according to that days entry in Washington's diary. [vi] Battersea was originally patented in 1662, survey for 500 acres. In 1743, Butler STONESTREET (1703-1755) of Piscataway, Prince Georges, Maryland.  Butler was son of Thomas STONESTREET & Christian COGHILL. On December 4, 1774, Henry petitioned the Land Commission to survey three tracks of land named Battersea, Littleworth and Athley’s Folly all in Prince Georges County. All three of these tracks were formerly owned by his father, Butler. [vii]

Revolutionary War 1775 to 1783

Before the Revolutionary War started in 1775, Henry was a longstanding member of the Maryland Militia and a close friend of General George Washington. Henry  in 1775 was listed as  Adjutant General of the Maryland Militia. On January 27, 1778, he took the Oath of Fidelity and Support in Prince George’s County, Maryland. Henry served throughout the war as Adjutant General to the Maryland Militia. There are numerous references to payments made to him by the Maryland Council for payments of salary and accounts he rendered to supply the militia. [viii]

According to History - Maryland.gov Military Department "The coming of the American Revolution found numerous Maryland militia units serving with Washington’s Continental Army. Indeed, at the Battle of Long Island in 1776, several companies of the Maryland Battalion, later remembered as the “Maryland 400,” gained immortality by making repeated bayonet charges against a vastly superior British force, thereby saving the Continental Army, and probably the entire Revolutionary cause as well. Washington is reported to have exclaimed, “My God, what brave men must I lose today!” as he witnessed the attack. The Maryland Line, as the Maryland regiments later came to be collectively known, went on to fight in both the northern and southern campaigns of the Revolutionary War. Maryland’s official nickname, “The Old Line State” is derived from the Maryland Line." Maryland maintained a militia force after the revolution.
