Patrick HENRY (1736–1799) Governor of Virginia was the 6th great-grand-uncle of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) and the 7th great-grand-uncle of Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012).
Patrick HENRY (1736–1799) was the son of Colonel John Hendries HENRY (1704–1773) the emigrant & Sarah Dabney WINSTON (1704–1784). Patrick was born on May 29, 1736, at Studley Plantation, Hanover County, Virginia. Patrick died on June 6, 1799 at Red Hill Plantation Staunton River, Charlotte County, Virginia, at age 63. [i]
Patrick HENRY was a Founding Father of America. Patrick was an attorney, planter and statesman who became known as an orator during the movement for independence in Virginia. He led the opposition to the Stamp Act 1765 and is remembered for his "Give me liberty, or give me death!" speech. Patrick served as the first and sixth post-colonial Governor of Virginia, from 1776 to 1779 and from 1784 to 1786. [ii]
Patrick first married Sarah "Sallie" Anne SHELTON (5) on October 8, 1754 in Rural Plains, Hanover County, Virginia. Sallie was the daughter of Captain John SHELTON (1713–1777) & Eleanor PARKS (1713–1738). Sallie was born in 1738 in Rural Plains, Hanover County and died on March 19, 1775 in Scotchtown, Hanover County, Virginia, at age 37. [iii]

- i. Isaac HENRY was born on March 1, 1754 in Hanover County, Virginia and died on November 13, 1803 at age 49.
- ii. John HENRY was born in 1755 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia and died in 1823 in Rhea County, Tennessee at age 68.
- iii. Martha "Patsey" HENRY was born in June 1755 in Pine Slash, Hanover County, Virginia and died in October 1818 in Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia at age 63.
- iv. Sarah HENRY was born in 1756 at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia.
- v. William HENRY was born in 1756 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia and died in 1762 in Issue, Charles County, Maryland, at age 6.
- vi Annie HENRY was born in 1759 at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia and died in 1760 at Leatherwood, Henry County, Virginia, at age 1.
- vii. Edward HENRY was born in 1766 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia and died in 1767 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia, at age 1.
- viii. Anne HENRY was born on July 19, 1767 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia and died on May 22, 1799 in Montvale, Prince William County, Virginia at age 31.
- ix. William E. HENRY was born on February 21, 1769 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia and died in 1820 in Clinton County, Kentucky at age 51.
- x. Elizabeth "Betsey" HENRY was born on April 23, 1769 in Fork, Hanover County, Virginia and died on September 14, 1842 in Fontainbleau, Prince William County, Virginia at age 73.
- xi Edward Patrick "Neddy" HENRY was born on January 21, 1771 in Scotchtown, Hanover County, Virginia and died on October 28, 1794 in New, Amherst County, Virginia, at age 23.
- Patrick HENRY next married Dorothea Spotswood DANDRIDGE, (5) daughter of Nathaniel West DANDRIDGE (1729–1786) (5) and Dorothea SPOTSWOOD (1733–1773). They were married on October 8, 1771 in Rural Plains, Virginia. Dorothea was born on September 25, 1757 in Chelsea, Westmoreland County, Virginia and died on February 14, 1831 at Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte County, Virginia at, age 73. [v]

i. Dorothea "Dolly" Spotswood HENRY (5) was born on October 20, 1778 in Williamsburg, James City County, Virginia and died on June 17, 1854 in Elvira, Johnson County, Illinois at age 75.
ii. Sarah Butler HENRY was born on January 4, 1780, at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia and died on December 10, 1856 in Seven Islands, Halifax County, Virginia at age 76.
iii. Martha Catharina "Kitty" HENRY was born on November 3, 1781 at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia and died on May 22, 1801 in Fleets Bay Plantation, Northumberland County, Virginia at age 19.
iv. Patrick HENRY was born on August 15, 1783 at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia and died on September 22, 1804 in Union Hill, Nelson County, Virginia at age 21.
v. Henry HENRY was born in 1784 at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia.
vi. Caroline Winston HENRY was born in 1785 at Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia.
vii. George Lafayette HENRY was born on October 9, 1785 in Williamsburg, Virginia and died on March 16, 1813 in Red Hill, Charlotte County, Virginia at age 27.
viii. Fayette HENRY was born on October 9, 1785 in Leatherwood Plantation, Henry County, Virginia and died in 1813 in Richmond, Wise County, Virginia at age 28.
ix. Alexander Spotswood HENRY was born on June 2, 1788 in Williamsburg, Virginia and died on January 6, 1854 at Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte, Virginia, at age 65.
x. Nathaniel West HENRY was born on April 7, 1790 in Williamsburg, Virginia and died on September 6, 1851 in Jacksonville, Floyd County, Virginia at age 61.
xi. Edmund HENRY was born in 1791 in Williamsburg, Virginia.
xii. Richard HENRY was born on March 27, 1792 in Williamsburg, Virginia and died on August 24, 1793 in Long Island, Campbell County, Virginia at age 1.
xiii. Edward Winston HENRY was born on January 21, 1794 in Long Island, Campbell County, Virginia and died on October 12, 1872 in Winston, Charlotte County, Virginia at age 78.
xiv. John Butler HENRY was born on February 16, 1796 at Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte County, Virginia and died on January 7, 1868 at Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte County, Virginia, at age 71.
xv. Jane Robertson HENRY was born on January 15, 1798 in Williamsburg, Virginia and died on January 25, 1798 at Red Hill Plantation, Charlotte County, Virginia.

John emigrated from Foveran Parish, Aberdeenshire, Scotland and arrived in 1730 in Virginia. His future wife Dabney was born in Virginia in 1704.

Patrick HENRY (1736–1799) Governor of Virginia was the 6th great-grand-uncle of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) and the 7th great-grand-uncle of Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012).
My mom (Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012) and I made one of our ”Road Trips “ to visit Patrick Henry’s Hanover Tavern, were he assisted his father-in-law by greeting and serving guests, tending bar, and entertaining with his fiddle playing. Then to Hanover Court House, where he practiced Law.
We also visited his Scotchtown Plantation, which is the only original standing home of Patrick Henry, known as the “orator of the American Revolution,” Patrick lived there from 1771 to 1778 and conceived his most influential revolutionary ideas at the home, including his famous “Liberty or Death” speech.
Scotchtown was acquired by Preservation Virginia in 1958 and restored to its appearance during Patrick Henry’s life. The house is surrounded by reproduction outbuildings and gardens located in Beaverdam, Hanover County, Virginia.
In March of 1775, the Second Virginia Convention met at St. John’s Church in Richmond, Virginia to discuss the state’s strategy against the British. It was here that Patrick Henry delivered his most famous speech.
“Gentlemen may cry, ‘Peace, Peace,’ but there is no peace. The war is actually begun! The next gale that sweeps from the north will bring to our ears the clash of resounding arms! Our brethren are already in the field! Why stand we here idle?
... Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!"
