Marcus Ross BIRD (1816-1887) was the 3rd cousin two times removed of Jeff Augustus "Gus" BIRD (1893-1954) and the 8th cousin 11 times removed of Kirk Louis LINTON (1914-1987). Marcus was the son of Colonel Edward BIRD (1781–1856) & Margaret Elizabeth SMITH (1782–1836). Marcus was born on January 9, 1816, in Kings Creek, Rutherford County, North Carolina. [i]
Marcus fought in the Mexican War reaching the rank of Captain, according to the U.S., Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 (no detail record of his service was on record). The war lasted from January 1847 to June 1849. In 1847 The United Sates wins the Battle of Buena Vista, the Battle of Cerro Gordo and the Battle of Mexico City. [ii]
Marcus married Dorinda Alice NANCE (1832-1857) the daughter of Physician Zachariah NANCE (1800-1854) & Nancy Smith LIPSCOMB (1802-1857), circa 1850, in North Carolina. [iii] Dorinda was born on September 2, 1832 in Union District, Union County, South Carolina. Alice died, giving birth, on December 9, 1857, in Grover, Cherokee County, North Carolina. at age 25, and was buried in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [iv]
Marcus served in the Army of the Confederate States of America, as a private in Company B, 5th Carolina State Line Infantry from August 1, 1862 to November 9, 1863. Marcus was wounded at the Battle of Kelly's Ford, also known as the Battle of Kellysville or Kelleysville, which took place on March 17, 1863, in Culpeper County, Virginia. Marcus was discharged by the Surgeon. [v]
Marcus died on September 1, 1887, in Grover, Cherokee County, North Carolina. at age 71, and was buried in Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [vi]
Marcus & Dorinda had four known Children:
1. Mary Amanda "Madora" BIRD was born on May 1, 1851 in Grover, Cherokee County, North Carolina., was christened in Baptist Church, died on January 9, 1899 in Grover, Cherokee County, North Carolina. at age 47, and was buried in January 1899 in Grover, Antioch Baptist Church. Mary married John ROBERTS on March 19, 1872 in North Carolina. John was born on October 7, 1848 in Kings Creek, Rutherford County, North Carolina., was christened in Baptist Church, died on March 5, 1927 in Cherokee County, SC. at age 78, and was buried in March 1927 in Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. 2. Nancy Smith BIRD was born on November 13, 1852 in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina and died on July 1, 1937 in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina, at age 84. She was buried in July 1937, in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. Nancy married Reverent Elijah Bonaparte "Bonnar" McSWAIN (1853-1921) the son of Minster Louis Hobson McSWAIN (1814-1890) & Mary HAMRICK 1816-1906), on November 2, 1876, in Grover, Rutherford County, North Carolina. Elijah was born on November 19, 1853 in Cleveland County, North Carolina., died on April 13, 1921 in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina. at age 67. He was buried on April 15, 1921, in Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [viii]
3. Martha J. BIRD was born on January 31, 1856, in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina. She died on October 10, 1888 in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina. at age 32. She was buried in October 1888, in the Grover Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery, Cleveland County, North Carolina. Martha married Lawson A. BELL (1858-1925) circa 1880 in North Carolina. Lawson was born on May 27, 1858 in Cherokee Falls, Cherokee County, South Carolina and died on February 16, 1925, at age 66. [ix]
4. Margaret Ann BIRD was born on July 10, 1857 in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina., was christened in the Baptist Church, died on October 7, 1930 in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina. at age 73, and was buried in October 1930 in Kings Mountain, Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Margaret married John Harvey KESTER, son of John Harvey KESTER and Lovica INMAN, about 1879 in Cleveland County, North Carolina. John was born on March 21, 1852 in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina., was christened in Baptist Church, died in 1920 in Kings Mountain, Cleveland County, North Carolina. at age 68, and was buried in 1920 in Kings Mountain, Bethlehem Baptist Church Cemetery. Marcus Ross BIRD next married Amanda MOORE, on July 28, 1859 in South Carolina. Amanda was born on August 21, 1831 in North Carolina. She was a member in the Buffalo Baptist Church Buffalo, North Carolina from 1831 to 1861. Amanda died on October 19, 1862 in Buffalo, Dare County, North Carolina. at age 31, and was buried on October 22, 1862 in Buffalo Baptist Church Cemetery, Buffalo, Dare County, North Carolina. [xi]

Alice BIRD was born on July 28, 1861, in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina and died on February 2, 1925, in North Carolina. at age 63. Alice married Columbua C. WEBBER about 1881 in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina. Columbua was born about 1861 and died in Grover, Cleveland County, North Carolina. [xii]
