Chief Justice George READ (1733-1798) was one of the signers the Declaration of Independence for the Colony of Delaware a

George was the son of John READ (1700-1756) & Mary HOWELL (1710-1784).  Gertrude was the daughter of Reverent, emigrant George Aeneas ROSS (1679–1753) & Anna Catherine Van GEZEL (1689–1748). Gertrude  was born in 1735 and died on September 2, 1802 in New Castle, New Castle County, Delaware.

 

George married Gertrude ROSS (1735–1802) on January 11, 1763, in the Immanuel Church, in New Castle County, Delaware. 

 

Gertrude was the sister of Colonel George ROSS (1730-1779)  and the 2nd great-grandaunt of Thomas Jefferson  BIRD (1861-1931)  Also, the 3rd great-grandaunt of Jeff Augustus “Gus” BIRD (1893-1954)  and the 4th great-grandaunt of Evelyn Virginia BIRD Linton (1922-2012).

 

George & Gertrude had six known children:

 

John READ (1763–1831); George READ (1765–1836); William READ (1767–1846); John READ (1769–1851); Mary Maria READ (1770–1816); Living READ (1771–?).
